Environmental and Social (E&S) Engineer (Onsite)
kbr · Basra
Job description
About the role
KBR is looking for an Environmental and Social (E&S) Engineer to be based in Basra, Iraq, on a daily commute. The role bridges the gap between detailed engineering design and the environmental and social commitments set out in the project ESHIA report, aiming for zero non-compliance penalties and low environmental impact. It coordinates EHS interfaces between the Water Infrastructure Project, Pipeline Project, HDEC, TotalEnergies, CPP and other stakeholders.
Key responsibilities
- Review engineering drawings and process designs (e.g. seawater intake location, chemical treatments) to align with ESHIA commitments, and evaluate and mitigate marine impacts such as entrainment and impingement at seawater intakes.
- Ensure chemical storage, dosing systems (chlorine, anti-scalants) and wastewater management plans meet international standards.
- Act as the main technical contact for local environmental authorities and coastal management boards on EHSIA compliance, and monitor, track and close out conditions in the Environmental Authorization and permit-to-work documents.
- Conduct regular environmental and social audits of EPC subcontractors at construction and coastal construction sites.
- Oversee baseline and construction-phase monitoring of water quality, turbidity, marine ecology, underwater noise and sediment quality, analyse dispersion of discharged chemicals against mixing zone limits, and manage waste plans for marine dredged materials and construction debris.
- Coordinate the stakeholder engagement plan and community grievance redress mechanisms, and manage impacts on local socio-economic activities, including fishing communities and marine vessel traffic.
Required profile
- Degree in Environmental Engineering, Marine Biology, Chemical Engineering, Civil/Coastal Engineering or a related discipline.
- Typically 5 to 10+ years of engineering experience, with a strong track record in EPC contracts on large-scale infrastructure or water-treatment facilities.
- Knowledge of IFC Performance Standards (1 to 8), World Bank Group EHS Guidelines and local marine preservation laws.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, coordination and stakeholder management skills, and ability to work in a multicultural, fast-paced project environment.
Required skills
- Familiarity with marine modelling concepts such as CORMIX (highly preferred).
- Use of GIS tools (highly preferred).
