Environmental and Social (E&S) Manager

About the role

The company is looking for an experienced Environmental & Social (E&S) professional to lead the E&S performance of its terminal operations in Basra, Iraq. This field‑based position requires daily on‑site presence, high‑quality reporting, and regular liaison with the head office and international lenders such as the IFC.

Key responsibilities

• Own and manage the terminal’s Environmental & Social Management System (ESMS) in line with IFC Performance Standards (PS1‑PS8) and Iraqi regulations.
• Lead implementation and monitoring of the Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP), tracking progress and closing commitments.
• Conduct field‑based monitoring of emissions, waste, water, biodiversity, labor practices, community relations and grievance mechanisms.
• Manage community engagement, operate a functional grievance mechanism and maintain stakeholder relations.
• Oversee contractors and service providers for compliance with the ESMS and IFC standards, including audits and corrective actions.
• Develop and maintain supply‑chain risk assessments, screening, monitoring and a risk register.
• Prepare clear English reports for head office, shareholders and lenders, covering performance, ESAP status and incidents.
• Serve as the primary on‑ground contact for IFC and other lenders during site visits, audits and supervision missions.
• Coordinate with Health & Safety and operations teams for integrated E&S risk management.
• Support due‑diligence and reporting on port‑specific environmental risks such as dredging, marine impacts and water discharge.
• Build local capacity and mentor terminal staff on E&S requirements and international standards.

Required profile

• Significant professional experience in environmental and/or social performance management, preferably in ports, terminals, infrastructure, oil & gas or IFC/DFI‑financed projects.
• Strong working knowledge of IFC Performance Standards and the Equator Principles.
• Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and monitor ESMS and ESAP.
• Experience in community engagement, grievance handling and stakeholder management.
• Proven track record of reporting to international lenders and regulators.
