Legal Counsel

About the role

The Bank is looking for an experienced Legal Counsel to support the Head of Legal in managing the institution’s legal affairs. The role involves providing legal advice across the bank, ensuring compliance with Iraqi banking regulations, and representing the bank in legal proceedings.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Head of Legal in day‑to‑day department activities and priorities.
• Provide practical legal consultation on banking operations, products, services and related queries.
• Review, draft and negotiate contracts, agreements, policies and other legal documents.
• Monitor changes in laws and regulations issued by the Central Bank of Iraq and advise on their impact.
• Manage litigation, claims, disputes and coordinate with external counsel.
• Advise on corporate governance matters, including board and committee documentation.
• Identify legal risks and recommend preventive or corrective measures.
• Lead, guide and develop legal team members, acting for the Head of Legal when required.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Law with a postgraduate qualification; admission to practice law in Iraq.
• At least 10 years of relevant legal experience, preferably in banking or financial services.
• Fluency in Arabic and English, high integrity and professional judgment.
• Demonstrated experience in banking law, commercial contracts, corporate governance and dispute management.
