Shift Engineer - Oil and Gas Plant Operations

About the role

This Shift Engineer position covers the operation, monitoring and control of plant equipment during assigned shifts, ensuring safe, reliable and efficient operations. The role also includes supervising plant operators, supporting on-the-job training and coordinating with maintenance teams to minimise downtime.

Key responsibilities

• Operate, monitor and control plant equipment during shifts, perform routine inspections and report equipment abnormalities.
• Monitor process conditions, chemical dosing, production quality and equipment performance against operational targets.
• Record operating readings, maintain shift logbooks and give accurate handovers to the next shift.
• Coordinate equipment preparation, isolation and maintenance in line with Permit to Work (PTW) procedures.
• Check rotating equipment such as pumps and compressors for pressure, temperature, lubrication and flow.
• Maintain stocks of chemicals, consumables and replacement filter elements.
• Conduct safety inspections, keep good housekeeping and comply with HSE procedures.
• Respond to emergencies, equipment failures and gas leaks, including safe plant shutdown when required.
• Supervise and guide plant operators, support on-the-job training and coordinate with maintenance and other departments.
• Take part in start-ups, shutdowns, commissioning, modifications and turnarounds, and review operating procedures.
• Ensure compliance with environmental requirements and production targets.

Required profile

• Diploma or degree in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Process Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline.
• Minimum 6 years of experience in oil and gas production or process plant operations.
• Ability to work under pressure, in H2S environments and other challenging industrial conditions, and to coordinate multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Operating process equipment such as pumps, compressors, heaters, contactors and process vessels.
• Knowledge of gas sweetening, gas dehydration, refrigeration and sour gas operations, including H2S safety.
• Process monitoring, production optimisation and preventive/predictive maintenance.
• Permit to Work systems, equipment isolation and emergency response; mechanical and instrumentation knowledge is an advantage.
