Project Accountant – Oil & Gas Construction (Basra, Iraq)

About the role

You will be responsible for day‑to‑day project accounting on a large oil and gas construction site in southern Iraq. Reporting to the Finance Controller on‑site, you will manage bookkeeping, budgeting, cost control, cash‑flow forecasting and ensure full compliance with Iraqi tax and withholding requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain complete project accounting records, reconcile bank and counter‑party accounts, and support IFRS‑based reporting cycles.
• Prepare and update the project budget, track committed and actual costs, and produce Budget vs Actual, Cost‑to‑Complete and Forecast Final Cost reports.
• Develop cash‑flow forecasts and control the payment approval process, verifying contracts, purchase orders, deliveries, work completion, retention, WHT and tax compliance.
• Apply Iraqi corporate income tax, WHT, payroll tax, social security and customs duties; liaise with the General Commission for Taxes for registrations, filings and clearances.
• Maintain comprehensive registers (contract, payment, invoice, advance payment, retention, bank guarantee, WHT, tax compliance) ready for audit at any time.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
• Full professional proficiency in English and Arabic (written and spoken).
• Minimum 6 years of accounting or project finance experience, with at least 4 years in construction, EPC, infrastructure, oil & gas or industrial projects.
• Experience on projects above USD 30 million and familiarity with Iraq‑based projects is a plus.
• Professional qualification such as CA, ACCA, CPA or equivalent is desirable.

Required skills

• Advanced Excel.
• ERP/Accounting software experience (SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, QuickBooks, Zoho, Xero or similar).
• Working knowledge of IFRS as applied to construction and project accounting.
