Electrical and Computer Lab Instructor

About the role

The Electrical and Computer Lab Instructor is a full-time instructional staff member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the College of Engineering, reporting to the Department Chair. The role teaches laboratory and recitation sections that support theoretical courses in electrical engineering, computer engineering and computer science, such as programming, data structures and algorithms, software engineering, computer architecture, operating systems, networking, databases and applied artificial intelligence. It also covers preparing and managing lab environments, developing lab materials, assessing student work and maintaining safety standards.

Key responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Computer Science lab sessions, and deliver hands-on CS labs and recitations in programming, data structures, software engineering, operating systems, databases, networks and web development.
• Lead lab activities in AI, machine learning, data science and cybersecurity, including Jupyter-based data analysis and model training and evaluation.
• Design and update lab manuals, starter code, test suites and safety procedures, and prepare lab setups with hardware kits, development boards and software environments.
• Grade lab reports and code submissions with rubrics, automated testing and code review, and give timely feedback.
• Enforce lab safety and acceptable use policies, and apply code similarity checks and authentic assessment practices.
• Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment, coordinate with the lab manager and IT services, and complete required training on new equipment and software.
• Take part in departmental meetings and committees, and mentor students in lab settings and during office hours.

Required profile

• Master's degree in computer engineering, computer science or a closely related field from an accredited university.
• At least 2 years of college or university-level teaching or lab instruction experience; prior experience managing computing or electronics lab setups preferred.
• Knowledge of computer science pedagogy, including live coding, pair programming, scaffolded labs and formative assessment.
• Familiarity with the American higher education system, lab-based instruction and ABET-aligned assessment.
• Excellent written and verbal English, strong time management and collaboration skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency in at least two programming languages (e.g. Python, C/C++, Java).
• Version control (Git and GitHub), unit testing, Linux command line and IDEs (e.g. VS Code, Eclipse, IntelliJ).
• AI, machine learning and data science tools (Jupyter, NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn, TensorFlow or PyTorch) and cybersecurity lab platforms.
• LMS and automated grading platforms (Canvas, Moodle, GitHub Classroom, Gradescope).
• Engineering software for lab instruction (MATLAB, Multisim, LTspice, Quartus, Arduino IDE or similar).
