Project Manager for POPs and Chemical Hotspots Management

About the role

The Project Manager will serve as the principal day‑to‑day focal point for the Integrated Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Chemical Hotspots Management Project in Iraq. Reporting to the Programme Specialist and matrix‑reporting to the chief technical specialist of the Environment, Energy and Climate Change unit, the role coordinates technical assistance, capacity building and policy development.

Key responsibilities

• Lead strategic planning, annual work‑plan formulation and budget, HR and procurement coordination with UNDP Country Office teams.
• Provide high‑level technical guidance to ensure alignment with UNDP corporate priorities, donor requirements and national frameworks.
• Oversee technical quality of outputs, studies, assessments and knowledge products, ensuring compliance with international standards.
• Advise UNDP management on emerging risks, opportunities and innovative solutions to enhance project impact.
• Guide integration of cross‑cutting issues such as gender equality, environmental sustainability and human rights into project implementation.

Required profile

• Proven experience in managing large‑scale environmental or climate‑change projects, preferably in the Middle East.
• Strong knowledge of POPs, hazardous chemicals management and related international conventions.
• Ability to supervise multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with national ministries and UN partners.
• Excellent analytical and strategic thinking skills, with a track record of delivering results under donor and government mandates.
