Airfield Operations Specialist

About the role

The Airfield Operations Specialist will manage day‑to‑day airfield activities at Balad, Iraq, ensuring safe, secure, and efficient operations for both local and transient aircraft. The role includes overseeing runway maintenance, safety checks, and coordination with air traffic control while implementing safety protocols.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect all airfield areas (pavements, markings, signs, lighting, obstructions, wildlife hazards, fencing, construction zones, FOD, fueling activities) in line with regulations.
• Operate vehicles on the airfield and communicate directly with the ATC tower.
• Coordinate runway closures and construction activities to minimize impact on flight operations.
• Respond to in‑flight and ground emergencies and maintain event logs, flight schedules, and discrepancy records.
• Issue NOTAMs through the FAA system and enforce a FOD‑free environment.
• Train and certify new airfield drivers and manage wildlife control devices such as BASH cannons.
• Collaborate with other departments, agencies, foreign governments, and nationals to ensure harmonious operations.
• Work rotating day and night shifts as required.

Required profile

• Minimum three (3) years of airfield management experience.
• Additional three (3) years in a shift‑lead or equivalent supervisory role.
• High school diploma; Associate’s degree in aviation preferred.
• Ability to obtain an airfield driver permit and possess normal color vision.
• Valid state driver’s license.

Required skills

• USAF Airfield Management 5‑Skill level certification (or equivalent).
• Proficiency with the FAA NOTAM system.
• Airfield driver permit and vehicle operation on airfields.
• Knowledge of BASH (Bird/Wildlife Aircraft Strike Hazard) mitigation and wildlife control devices.
• FOD inspection and control procedures.
